Countertops 101: Comparing Countertop Materials
If you are planning to replace your kitchen countertops, you may feel like there are too many kitchen countertop materials to choose from. While there are definitely a lot of options, knowing the ins and outs of the materials can help you to make a decision.
Natural Woods
Often, for wood countertops, people choose hardwoods like maple or oak. These create durable counters that are equally elegant. You can use these woods for chopping food and if you have it finished, then you don’t have to worry about its appearance. Of course, it may scorch if used with hot pots or pans.
Solid Surfacing
Solid surface materials mimic natural stone. These countertops may look like granite or marble. These durable kitchen countertop materials can handle high impact. In addition, they are nonporous, so you don’t have to worry about bacterial, dirt or stains. This type of countertop, however, may not withstand heat as well.
Granite Counters
Granite counters are among the most durable. They are heat resistant and can stand up to kitchen chores. In addition, they are easy to clean and maintain. Of course, the biggest drawback is that granite counters tend to have the highest price point.
Laminate Counters
Laminate counters are the ones that people are most familiar with. A high-pressure laminate is applied to particleboard or plywood to create this type of counter. These are great, cost-effective options with a lot of styles to choose from. The only issue is, however, that they are less durable than other surfaces.
Ceramic Tiles
Porcelain and ceramic tiles are a popular countertop choice. These come in so many design options, can be unique and hand-painted or standard. These are relatively inexpensive but you do need to maintain this countertop to prevent any chipping.
As you think about replacing your current counters, keep in mind the different kitchen countertop materials available to you. With all of the different types on the market, it might be hard to choose unless you weigh out the pros and cons.
